Proton Launches Malaysia’s First Electric Vehicle Plant Amid Industry Shift
Malaysia’s national automaker, Proton, has inaugurated its first electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Perak, marking a significant step in the country’s push towards sustainable automotive manufacturing.
The new facility, located in the Automotive High-Tech Valley, is designed to produce up to 20,000 EVs annually, with the potential to scale up to 45,000 units. The initial models to roll off the production line will be the e.MAS 7 and the more affordable e.MAS 5, both of which are expected to cater to the growing demand for electric mobility in Southeast Asia.
Proton, which is majority-owned by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-HICOM, has partnered with China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which holds a 49.9% stake in the company. The collaboration aims to leverage Geely’s expertise in EV technology to accelerate Proton’s transition into the electric vehicle market.
At the launch event, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of Malaysia-China collaboration in advancing the country’s automotive industry. He encouraged Geely to expand its role beyond manufacturing to include training and education initiatives, fostering a skilled workforce capable of supporting the evolving automotive sector.
This development aligns with the Malaysian government’s broader strategy to position the country as a regional hub for electric vehicles. The government has set a target for EVs and hybrids to constitute 20% of all new vehicle sales by 2030, reflecting a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
The establishment of Proton’s EV plant is expected to have significant economic implications. It is anticipated to create thousands of jobs in the manufacturing and supply chain sectors, contributing to economic growth and technological advancement. Additionally, the move is likely to attract further investment into Malaysia’s automotive industry, reinforcing the country’s position as a competitive player in the global EV market.
This development underscores Malaysia’s commitment to embracing sustainable technologies and positioning itself as a leader in the electric vehicle industry in Southeast Asia.
